This project works hard to put a lot of space into a small area. On a formerly single family lot, we were able to design an efficient apartment building with 14 very livable units. We invested a lot of time early in the project to understand all of the zoning and building code requirements to both maximize the buildable area of a small lot while creating a contextually relevant building in a transitional NE Portland neighborhood. Throughout the project we deployed design strategies to bring as much natural light and outdoor access to the residents as possible. The circulation was designed in a way to help bring a lot of natural light into corridor spaces to help them feel like pleasant community spaces rather than just utilitarian spaces. Design guidelines required heavy trim and cornices that we blended into the design using creative detailing techniques and material choices.
