MSD is a small but vibrant independent school serving students from toddler age through middle school. The school needed room to grow but wanted to remain on its existing campus. We were hired to work closely with staff and teachers to analyze their current spaces and evaluate whether the campus could support a larger student body. Through that process, we developed a multi-phase plan that allows the school to stay in place while minimizing disruption to the academic year whenever possible.

Phase 1 of the Master Plan includes renovations to two buildings. The front office relocated into a larger permanent, front facing former classroom space, which opened the opportunity for a temporary, smaller library. This shift also allowed the lower elementary program to expand into the remaining former library area. Drawing on ideas of thresholds and curiosity, we created a design strategy that plays with scale and imagination while reusing as much of the existing school as possible.
